What is distracted driving? According to NHTSA, distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.

Mapping Travel: Smartphone Alternative
Taking smartphone on long or oversea trips...
I will be honest, I am still quite apprehensive about taking my phone everywhere I go. It's a pricey gadget. Moreover, besides helpful navigation it has a lot of other stuff stored on it. I would not want to be separated from it. Ever. (Keep Your Gadgets Safe While Traveling)
So while it is a bit more old school, I still prefer to grab a paper map of the location we are in once we arrived there. It usually has good details as well as marking of major squares and centers and local restaurants and even coupons.
Here is a series of shots, and what has become a tradition, of me reading the map and leading us on our next adventure:
