Gadgets For Cold Weather

Just in time for the cold and snowy weather here in NY, here is an article about some tech gadgets that make the icey freeze over a bit more comfortable and fun.

Gadgets For Cold Weather
By: Jeremy Thompson

One of the newest cold weather gadgets is the Yaktrax Traction Device. Walking on ice will feel just like walking on solid dry pavement with the innovative design of Yaktrax.
Yaktrax use a unique design called the Skidlock coil system. The bottom of each Yaktrax is furnished with tiny coils that provide 450 sharp edges that become embedded in the ice when you take a step. The coils stretch into the ice giving you non-slip support in all directions so you don't slide forward, backward or to one side. And as you continue walking the Skidlock coils snap back into place so they're ready to do their job on the next step you take.

Yaktrax are easy to use and are not bulky like other shoes or boots designed for traction. They fit easily over the sole of your shoes or boots and won't slip off when you need them most. Yaktrax Traction devices also don't have spikes or sharp edges that can damage floors, so you can wear them inside without any worries.

The Himalayan Expedition Mitts are another simple yet effective gadget for keeping your hands toasty warm, no matter how low the thermometer drops. Manufactured by Grandoe, a 100 year old, well-known provider of high-performance handware, this pair of mitts has been created to withstand the coldest, most extreme conditions that can be found on the planet.

The Himalayan Expedition Mitts were created with a 100% polyester MicroVortex and Gore-Tex outer shell, complete with an acrylic coating, which helps the mitts resist the tears and abrasions that can come with regular use. This coating is great for repelling water and melting snow, so that your hands inside can stay dry and warm. The Himalayan Mitts are insulated with microfiber ThermaDry that will maintain its warming properties even when it gets wet.

Another gadget for cold weather will help keep you warm while being functional too. The Headphone Beanie is for those people who constantly listen to music or are wearing headphones for some reason, and still want to listen while keeping their head warm. The Headphone Beanie has speakers built right into the hat so you can listen to music no matter what the temperature without getting frostbite on your ears.

Simply plug in your iPod, MP3 player, or other small electronic device into the headphone jack on the back of this comfortable hat. Then adjust the speakers to fit your ears and you're ready to go. Whether you're walking, running, or outside listening to a ball game, you can keep warm while you listen with the Headphone Beanie Hat.

Portable Luggage Scale

With new and higher fees being added what seems to be every day in air travel, often its good to know the weight of your luggage before you get to the airport. This could save you a lot of time and maybe more importantly pain of repacking the bags in front of the check-in counter or having to leave stuff behind and also save you money on excess baggage fees.
Airline baggage weight limits can be very confusing as they differ from one airline to another (take a look at this usefull airline baggage fees chart), and when you check your bags in at the airport there's always that nagging feeling that your puffed out suitcase might be just over the limit. Portable digital (or analog) luggage scaleto the rescue.
These relatevely small devices have become an essential gadget for air travel. They can weigh your bags in kg, grams, oz, or lbs, and do so more or less accurately. With the digital scale it is even easier as someone of them beep when done measuring and display the weight in easy to read numerals.
The portable luggage scalecan then be carried in your hand luggage so that you can check your bag weight again on the way home - which is very handy if you've stocked up on souvenirs and duty free goods during your holiday.
Moreover, these gadgets can also serve doube duty at home in the kitchen, shop, for fishing and outdoor activities. Just dont try to weight self or others, most have a 50 lbs limit :)

A follow up to "Hand-Cranked Cell Phone Charger"

On January 18th I wrote about a quite useful travel gadget, a phone charger that can generate power by winding it up by hand, and can charge variety of devices that are commonly taken along on a trip. Today, I found a great article that explains just how this little gadget works on HowStuffWorks.com and thought it would be a great follow up:
