Recent storm on the east coast that left us and many others in the dark, made me think of the useful gadgets that would work when there is no electricity. While these can be great at home, these would be awesome to take along on a trip as well.
Hand Crank Radio
No power, these days that means no communications. That is when a radio comes in very handy so that you can still get the latest news and be in the know of what is going on around while traveling around.
Radios with batteries are great, though as I found out during the storm Sandy, some radios do not even have standard alkaline batteries. Our radio/alarm only had a data backup battery and was nonoperational during the storm. So we ended up with no radio and no news. That is why first purchase after the power came on was Ambient Emergency Solar Hand Crank Radio, which is compact with multitude of features and great reviews on Amazon.com.
LED Flashlight
Sitting in the dark or better yet walking in the dark is not fun when the lights go out. It could be quite dangerous as not only would you bump into things, but you can also step on or step into things. Flashlights that have multiple sources of power are essential gadget, such as Energizer Weatheready 3-LED Rechargeable Crank Light, when traveling and at home.
Portable Lantern
Camping out, going on a long trip, or in case of lifts going out at home, a portable lantern can provide plenty of light. You do not have to hold on to it at all times and it disperses light better than a flashlight.
Wind 'N Go Portable Lantern/Radio is relatively slim, easy to power up, and also doubles as a radio.
Portable Power Supply
Pocket Socket Hand Crank Generator provide power on the go in your car or boat when you need it most. Acts as a power source for up to 7 hours in any emergency situation. Generates electricity for flashlights, mobile phones, radios, cameras, rechargeable lights and other critical devices.
