Part of my Bucket List was to make a clay pot. It is #85 on the list. As of this week, I can now cross it off as we did a clay-making class over the weekend and made some pots, bowl, and cups.
This was a wheel type of pottery class. The official name is Clay Wheel Throwing workshop. I have never heard of the name, though I did know that I wanted to do clay-making class with a wheel. The idea was romanticized in the movie Ghost. We also saw this first hand on our trip to Greece where a guy was making beautiful plates and decanter right in front of us on a wheel.
Doing the class was an awesome experience. We now know at least the basics of sculpting something out of clay. It was exciting to see a brown lump of soil and water getting transformed into more recognizable shapes.
It is a fun experience, and if you are looking to do it, I would provide one advice, do not wear clothes you like. Wear something simlpe and that you would not mind getting muddy. You will get dirty! No matter how careful you are or how much you try to keep things clean, wheel throwing clay making is a messy endeavor.
