15 Essentials to have with you when traveling

Many folks ask what travel gadgets you can't travel without. And the answers are usually iPad, smarphone, eReader, and such. These are great tech gadgets, though they are, for the most part, entertainment. Here are 15 gadgets you should not leave home without because they will keep you safe, healthy, and happy on the road:

Safe Hydration:

Steripen Traveler Water Purifier
Keep on Traveling Safe - Check the app, Pull out a Pen, and Drink Up

and

Reusable BPA-free water bottle - keeps you hydrated during the trip, keeps the liquid cool, and can be used over and over instead of buying and carrying multiple water bottles. Hence these bottles save you money as well as space and weight while traveling. And they also help save our planet. Reusable water bottle
It is well known that to avoid waterborne creepy crawlies you should not drink tap water in places where you are not sure about its quality. Having a reusable water bottle with you instead, you can fill it up at a hotel or other sources of safe drinking water before heading out.
Also bottled water available for purchase has a significant impact on the environments we visit. A better choice and also much cheaper would be to take a reusable water bottle. That combined with a water purifier would make travel more budget-friendly, healthier, as well as eco-friendly.

Keep Things Clean:

First Aid Kit (Most important pack when traveling)
Good items to include in the kit are:
•first-aid manual
•sterile gauze
•adhesive tape and bandages in several sizes
•antiseptic wipes
•antibiotic cream/solution (triple-antibiotic ointment)
•hydrocortisone cream (1%)
•acetaminophen and ibuprofen
•tweezers
•sharp scissors
                  •safety pins
                  •disposable instant cold packs
                  •calamine lotion
                  •alcohol wipes or ethyl alcohol
•plastic gloves (at least 2 pairs)
                  •Hand sanitizer

Transporting the Goods:

Waterproof case:

Anti-Theft Travel Handbag - these bags are slashproof to keep your valuables inside in crowded places or not well lit alleys. Have RFID-blocking pocket to store your credit cards and also passport so they cannot be scanned by thieves looking to still your digital identity. Water repellent material keeps the bag and items inside dry. The bags also feature security zippers for not so easy access to your valuables.

Lowepro Passport Sling Camera Bag
This bag fits the DSLR perfectly in it. It also fits cables, water bottle, snacks, keys, wallet, and a light shirt. It is versatile enough to use as a day bag when it’s not packed with camera and other travel gear. My wife loves it. It looks like a regular over the shoulder bag. Which is great as it does not announce to all that there is a camera in there. Without opening it up and looking inside you would not even know its a camera bag. We also put in it while on the trip a collection of travel gadgets: point-and-shoot camera, watch, chargers, batteries, and flash memory cards. The outside of the bag has pockets and dividers that will keep your cell phone, pens, sunglasses, and other useful travel accessories organized and easily accessible. And just in case you over stuff the bag with all this, there is a zipped up expansion to make the bag larger to accommodate.

Luggage Scale

Travel Clocks

These useful gadgets come in handy when on a business trip. Though you would think why would you need those on a vacation? Well good question. While there are some vacations that are just for relaxing, a lot of the time travelers also plan some excursions and tours of the city that start at a certain hour. Also, each hotel that you stay in has a different type of alarm (some B&B's do not have any). It would be a lot easier if you could learn to set up one and have that along with you no matter where you are so you are on time.
Recently, I gave one such travel clock to my parents as they take several trips during the year for business and pleasure. They liked it a lot before even taking it on their first trip. They liked that it is small, light and easy to pack. It also includes a back-light with easy-to-read time display so you can see it easily at night.

Packing It In:

Travelon 1-Quart Zip-Top Bag with TSA Approved Plastic Bottles

Space Bags - you can pack all the cloth and travel accessories for a week and a half trip into only 2 carry-ons! That is right, on the way to Cali we had no bags to check-in. This meant that we saved money on airline fees and also hassle and time of picking it up after the flight. We did however have one to check-in on the way back filled with wine bottles and other goodies.

Other Essentials:

Rain gear
Emergency Poncho

Camera
A digital camera is probably the most essential travel tool so make sure you have one ready for your next trip. When going on longer trips or tours, that would be better taken in without a lot of bags to drag around, it is great to take along a point-and-shoot camera. As mentioned in the post Rechargeable batteries charger - saves money saves planet, it is more convenient to power up your digital camera with rechargeable batteries. Some small cameras nowadays can take great shots that are almost as good as some semi-pro ones.
It would also be great to have a little folding tripod like the one from Gorillapod with the digital camera. Gorillapod is a very bendy tripod. It goes just about anywhere with its flexible legs that can wrap around objects and let you take pictures without having to hold the camera. This way you can get a whole shot of the family without leaving anyone behind the camera.

Swiss Army Knife - its a classic multi-tool. Everything you need and more within one device. Now it also comes with tech gadgets such as USB, flashlight, digital clock and thermometer

Noise canceling headphones - Music just makes the day go faster and helps you immerse in your own world and your relaxation.
Cheap earbuds and those rent-on-the-flight headphones, while functional, will not provide great sound or allow you to escape the surroundings, especially given all the background noise of a plane. A good pair of noise-canceling headphones will pay for themselves with quality of sound and serenity.

6 Tips to Secure Your Smartphone

Tips to Secure Your Smartphone:

The number of Americans using smartphones is rising dramatically. As smartphone speed and technology improve, individuals are using their phone to access personal information. Many users now access and manage business and personal email as well as banking and other financial data from their phone. This can make a hacked or stolen phone a one-stop shop for would-be thieves and scammers. These tips will help protect personal information on your phone.

  1. Set a screen lock and password for your phone. Leaving your phone without a password is asking for trouble.
  2. Enable the remote location feature on your phone. This may help you track a lost or stolen phone. Not all phones have this feature built in, but there are apps available for purchase. Some will allow you to remove personal information from your phone after it has been stolen.
  3. Only allow your phone to join trusted networks. Scammers sometimes set up fake wireless networks in public places to lure users into joining the network. This may allow the scammer to track any data to and from your phone.
  4. Update your phone's software. Software updates frequently include security patches. Failing to update your phones software may leave you vulnerable to hackers.
  5. Do not “jail-break” your phone. The practice of “jail-breaking” a phone involves opening up the operating system to applications that were not designed to work on it. This will make your phone vulnerable to hackers.
  6. Only download well-reviewed and tested applications. Some apps may include malicious software designed to capture your personal information.

Mobile Scanner - Business Travel Must Have

How many time have you found yourself with crumpled up receipts sticking out everywhere? Piled up in glove compartment, side pocket of your bag or wallet, or in a pocket of your pants.
While traveling, I have experienced that many times. You go out all the time while on a trip. Going to a restaurant, shopping, visiting attractions and so on. And the receipts from every one of these places pile up. You toss some out, but other you hold on for the time being. This is especially true for business travelers since you would need all of the proofs of purchase if you would like to be reimbursed later on by your company. The answer for the paper mess comes in the form of handheld scanners. An advancement in technology that made large imposing printer scanners into small transportable gadgets. These measuring only 1.5" x 2" x 11-13" and weighing a mere 1.5 pounds on average.

One of the first ones on the market, the first compact scanner that I ever saw, was NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner. Not only is this one slim and able to scan receipts, business cards and documents so you can organize, store and secure all your important information. It also comes with software that identifies and extracts the important information - and automatically organizes it for you. Which I thought was a great addition since its great to digitize the documents, but it is even better when they are easy to sort and view.

Other highly rated hand-held scanners:
Planon DocuPen RC805 (4+ star rating - Cnet and PCMag)

- Fujitsu SCANSNAP S1100

- Brother DSMobile Scanner

Why good to have on a trip:

- Lightweight and powered by a USB port or Wireless
- Scans without the need for a computer
- Save digital copies of receipts and records of vendors, dates, and totals
- Export data to PDF, Excel®, Quicken®, QuickBooks®, TurboTax®
- It is the greatest way to keep track of all the small receipts when on business trips or vacation

"I'd go so far as to say that this little gadget now ranks on the indispensability scale right up there with TiVo, iPod and HDTV."

Winter trip to summer home of the rich and the famous (Hamptons, LI)

Last weekend we took a trip to Long Island. Winter is not exactly known as the season for traveling to Southampton, though we thought it was a great time to check out the sites without getting stuck in traffic or dealing with crazy summer crowds It was our first time venturing that far west on the island. We actually made it all the way to west-most point of LI, Montauk Lighthouse.

Another unique part of this trip was that for the first time in all our travels, this venture was not pre-planned. We decided to take the trip a couple of weeks before. This was quite unusual for my wife, who likes to start the research and planning months before a trip and have every stop mapped out.

While I did take a look at some of the attractions in out potential destination and we did book a stay at B&B beforehand, the rest was left up to last minute decisions or whatever we find on our phones. And that is where the idea for this type of trip actually originated and was helped with significantly. We both, finally, had smartphones.

We were able to look up wineries to visit and their location while en route. There is app for the LI Wine Country that provided most of the information. Other apps we used to plan out the day were the TripAdvisor and Yelp to find places to dine. And Google Maps to track where we are and to plan stops according so we do not drive in circles or unnecessary distance to conserve on gas.

During our trip we visited 7 wineries. It was great to see the types that are located in Long Island and sample the variety of wines. This would have been a lot tougher in the warmer months with huge crowds. There were a few folks out and about, probably as sign of the time, though the wait was minimum if at all in most places.
Laurel Lake Winery was one of my favorites. They have a great selection with both reds and whites.
Other wineries we visited were:
Wolffer's Estates - very elegant atmosphere with a sit down wine tasting
Duckwalk - large variety of wines and friendly staff
Pindar - one of the largest wineries that produces a lot of the grapes or the region
Beddell - it was an eclectic taste as well as decor

Our other stops were the Village Cheese Shop, located on Love Lane (that is a real name) in Mattituck, that has great selection of cheese and even better service with friendly and knowledgeable staff. And we also got snacks at the Tate's Bakery, some tasty chocolate chip cookies.
Overnight, we stayed at Ele's Hideaway B&B. It was a great looking house, with in-bathroom jacuzzi, beautiful and large bedroom. The host was very nice and so was the breakfast in the morning.

Other notable tid bits from the trip:
- It was the first time that I took my current car up to 100 mph
- It seemed that LI was the land of Range Rovers, at least during this season, as just about every car on the road was either a Range or Land Rover.
- We saw the house from the show "Revenge" that is shown in the arial shots (it is kind of visible in the beach pictures below)

List of usual suspects/ Gadgets we had with us:

Cruising the Bahamas..in Parkas!

Article first published as Cruising the Bahamas...in Parkas! on Technorati:
As I eluded a couple of posts ago, we went on a week-long cruise to the Bahamas. While we sailed from the chilly East Coast, we were looking forward to some warm rays of sun on the Islands of the Bahamas. Well, we got about a day of warm sun. The rest of the time the temperatures were at around mid 50s.
The scene kind of looked like this when we got off the boat on the 2nd day in port in Nassau:

a bit of photo editing here as was
not able to get the picture of actual cruisers ;)

Though we did get to enjoy a beautiful day in Port Canaveral, Florida and half a day in Nassau. My wife had her camera along of course and you can view some of the pictures in the Bahamas Cruise album.

photos by Svetik Photography

A new travel companion for this trip was the camera bag Lowepro Passport Sling Camera Bag. This bag fit the DSLR perfectly in it. Even with the new larger lens that wife just got. (For photo enthusiasts, the lense is Sigma 18-250mm). Moreover, it also fits cables, water bottle, snacks, keys, wallet, and a light shirt. It is versatile enough to use as a day bag when it’s not packed with camera and other travel gear. It looks like a regular over the shoulder bag. Which is great as it does not announce to all that there is a camera in there. Without opening it up and looking inside you would not even know its a camera bag. We also put in it while on the trip a collection of travel gadgets such as the point-and-shoot camera, watch, chargers, batteries, and flash memory cards. The camera compartment is a padded bucket that is removable and also comes with a small pocket for memory cards. The outside of the bag has pockets and dividers that will keep your cell phone, pens, sunglasses, and other useful travel accessories organized and easily accessible. And just in case you over stuff the bag with all this, there is a zipped up expansion to make the bag larger to accommodate.

The smartphone has become almost an obvious travel gadget. A lot of the folks had one with them, even though we did not have service most of the trip. They were sharing photos, making notes and contacts, and playing games. Both kids and adults.

While it is not exactly a tech gadget, though some of these are packed with quite a bit of latest manufacturing technology, I realized the sunglasses are definitely a must-have travel gadget. Especially, if you are traveling anywhere down south. On the first day on board of our cruise-liner we went to check out the ship and the deck before unpacking. It was a nice day outside and quite sunny. Since my sunglasses were packed away, I had to squint to enjoy the views. Avoid strange photos and crow's feet, and protect your eyes, bring and wear sunglasses.

The usual suspects that we had on the trip:
- Canon PowerShot SX120IS
- Canon DSLR
- Joby Gorillapod
- Eneloop rechargeable batteries and charger
- newest must-bring gadget - iPhone

Did You Know?:
Average (regular) temperature in Nassau, Bahamas in January is around 75 degrees.
