Internet of Things (IoT) and Travel - The Evolving World of Getting There

Internet of Things (IoT) and Travel

What is Internet of Things (IoT)?

"The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects, devices, vehicles, buildings and other items which are embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data. The "Internet of Things" connects devices and vehicles using electronic sensors and the Internet." (Wikipedia)

Mobile devices play a key role in the travel these days. The smartphone is the essential travel gadget on most travel packing lists.

Keeping An Eye On Home
With IoT technology integrated into your home, you can monitor it when away. You can turn on cameras to see what is happening. Set up sensors to turn on or turn off lights and appliances. Even your doorbell becomes smart with the integration of Internet. Using a doorbell such as SkyBell, you will be able to see who is ringing your doorbell, speak to them, and with smart locks also decide if they can come in and unlock the door.

Find Your Way Around Destinations
Beacons help find the way around Disney parks. At Disney, you can get a MagicBand, a radio-powered bracelet that will open your hotel room door, let you into the parks, let you get onto rides more quickly, and even pay for your food.

With beacons installed throughout the airport terminal and your smartphone device, new apps will be able to show you maps which can be focused to highlight exactly where you are and where you need to be, including the time to get there. You’ll always know when to get to the gate.

Smart Suitcases
The new suitcases are filled with tech so that they can be tracked and monitored. Smart carry-on cases make sure to always stay within your reach. Or if checked-in, you will be able to see the route your luggage made while you were en route to your destination.

Hotels
Smart sensors in connected devices such as 'smart' thermostats, drop-cams, coffee makers, connected mirrors, robot butlers and smart light bulbs can work together to automatically personalize environmental conditions for guests based on their proximity and movement patterns.
Lighting and temperature can be automatically adjusted based on sensor data from IoT devices, increasing efficiency and eliminating waste.
Hotels can automatically send electronic key cards to their guests' mobile devices, providing a comprehensive self-check-in and room key service. Smart locks with NFC readers can allow guests to restricted access to facilities on demand for improved security. Moreover, for returning guests, hotels can save room preferences and automatically load them at each visit, ensuring all guests enjoy a consistent, customized experience.
In hotels rooms, there are connected mini bars that feature removal sensors for auto-charging guests. You will get auto charge for anything you remove from the bar, so leave those little bottles where they are.

Wireless Thermostat and Lights
Wireless thermostats will set the perfect temperature in the home upon your arrival after a long flight. And wireless bulbs will make sure that your house looks occupied while you're away and can also be turned on remotely before you reach your front door.

As a marketer, I'm pretty familiar with IoT. I was unaware about smart suitcases! This will definitely be useful if the luggage doesn't make it to your destination and you need to wait a day. Tracking it the next day will be awesome!
