Update: iOS 14 is now available

iOS 14 will have new capabilities for Siri, Messages, Home, and Maps, as well as the ability to view picture-in-picture video. Quite a few changes will be beneficial for at home and when traveling.
ios 14 home screen

Dynamic widgets on the home screen
» Now you can adjust the home screen to not only display apps and app folders but also various widgets. It can come in handy if you find yourself always swiping to look at the weather, news, maps, or other travel widgets. The information will be readily available on the front screen.

ios 14 apps library

Apps Library
Besides the change to the home screen, there is also a redesign for how the apps appear on phone. While there were already folders available for sorting hundreds of apps on your phone, the Library will automatically organize all of your apps into one view and sorted by category.

Smart switching for AirPods
» AirPods are easy to connect them with any other Apple device, whether it's an iPhone, an iPad, or a Mac. They are also quite easy to connect to non-Apple devices as well. As long as that device has a Bluetooth connection, AirPods can be discovered and connected. However, if you are using the earphones with a phone and a computer, you have to reconnect them on whichever device you are about to listen to. iOS update will introduce smart switching that will help you switch from one device to another more smoothly.
I recently got the AirPods Pro and it can be a pain when you get on a meeting or start watching a video and realize that the earphones are not connected. The sounds start coming off the device or not at all. Hoping this update will make the transitions a bit better.

CarPlay Keyless entry with iPhone
» The car keys are becoming virtual and shareable. With the update, you will be able to open and start a compatible automobile with just your phone. If you would like to share your ride with someone else, you can just send them the virtual access instead of physical keys. The keys can be shared through an iMessage, and users can deactivate keys remotely through iCloud.

ios 14 apple maps guides

Apple Maps & Guides
» Maps also getting an update in iOS 14 with the introduction of Guides. Guides provide tips for places around the world to eat, shop, and explore. You can save Guides, and they automatically update when new places are added, so you always have the latest recommendations.

WatchOS 7
» Apple Watch software is also getting an update. It will make customizing watch faces easier, and grant users the ability to share faces as well. It adds sleep tracking, the ability to track hand-washing, as well as dance routines.

ios 14 translate app

Translate app
» Apple has introduced a new translation app, called Translate, that enables real-time translation between two different languages
Google has had a translating app for awhile. We have been using quite a bit as it has fast translations and great features. One of the newest and coolest is the ability to use the camera to point to something written in a different language and see it translated into other languages right in front of your eyes.
It is great to now have a native app on the iPhone that has similar capabilities and more.
Additionally, an iPhone with the Translate app can be put in between two people speaking different languages and can translate what they are saying in real-time. This is the type of feature I have been waiting for and dreaming about. This a great tool for traveling to not miss out on conversations in languages you are studying.
Recently, I bought the earphones from Waverly Labs that promised this type of capability. However, they came up very short in not only being able to translate accurately, but they were unusable in all other situations for earphones. I had a hard type connecting them to my phone and playing sounds from different apps. And if they did connect, one of the pieces kept going out or losing connection entirely.

Good Old Calls Get Update Too
» Incoming calls will be displayed as a banner notification for the first time.
    - You will be able to choose these settings when receiving phone calls
    - This way when you are reading or viewing a map, your entire screen will not be blocked by the incoming call. Instead, it will just be a notification at the top of the screen.

Here’s what else is new:
  • iOS introduces a picture-in-picture feature that lets the user pop up a small screen that floats on top of other apps while the user is watching a video.
  • The update also includes a redesign of the Siri interface. Siri has 20 times more facts than a few years ago.
  • New guides from the likes of Zagat will be included inside Apple’s Maps app. This will add content about restaurants or attractions within the app.
  • If an app is using an iPhone’s camera or microphone, Apple has introduced a new notification to inform the user.
ios 14 privacy label

Apple addressed privacy changes in the app store, too. Apple introduced a new “nutrition label” for apps that summarizes an app’s privacy policy. It will be displayed on App Store pages, Apple said.

Extra:
Apple is likely to unveil the new iPhone 12 this fall.  It will have an addition of 5G and an OLED display.
Apple will not include AirPods or a wall charger with iPhone 12 models this year.
