Over the weekend, we took a trip to the Intrepid Sea and Space Museum. Intrepid is an aircraft carrier built during World War II and has been docked in the New York harbor and is now a fixed museum that includes the ship, planes on its top deck, and space exploration exhibit. The excursion was interesting for the kiddo as well as us. There was a lot to learn and see throughout the ship and at the dock. The admission price includes the Space exhibit and the submarine.

Weekend Family Travel & Ideas: Aviation Museum

Family Weekend Getaways & Ideas: Aviation Museum

It is cold outside. Which means all of the activities are either subsided or are taken inside. With not as many ways to release their energy and the highs from all of the candy during the holiday season, kids are home and getting restless. A great way to take advantage of all that energy and also for them to learn something is to take them to a museum. These places of various collections have a lot of indoor space and usually are more or less supervised and are great for family winter weekend getaways.

One thing to keep in mind when bringing your child is to determine which museum is right for them and how long you plan on being there. Children's museums have a lot of interactive exhibits, some offer crafts areas, and other fun activities. These are usually better for the younger kids. They are more likely to be engaged and playing for a bit longer period of time. This also means they will get hangry and need to make sure you plan for a snack break. Pack a backpack with water and light dry snacks for your trip.
History and cultural museums tend to be more adult and older children oriented, so you would want to make sure that you are planning to be there for only a couple hours before your child starts the get antsy.

Over the weekend we took our energizer bunny to the Cradle of Aviation Museum

Travel Local - Kid-Friendly Family Travel To PA and NJ

Travel Local - Kid-Friendly Family Travel To PA and NJ(click to tweet)

We took a Friday off and took a trip slightly south to Philadelphia and New Jersey. We were looking to avoid a lot of the crowds, however, the weather didn't really help that as it was cloudy and rainy the entire weekend. And so a few people had the idea of taking their kids indoors for fun activities. However, according to some of the attendants at the venues, these were not the number of people they would expect on a May weekend.

Come Fly With Us - Travel Themed Books Review

We have a nightly ritual with our 3-year old that includes reading 3 books each night. She gets a choice from her collection and we have some time together to wind down. Recently, we were sent three books written by Captain Rob Johnson who writes books about two pilots - Pilot Ollie and Pilot Polly. Read the rest of the book review here

Road Trips With Kids - What To Take Along

Road Trips With Kids - What To Take Along

Last weekend, we took a road trip to NJ to pick strawberries. On the way, my daughter got sick all over the car seat. It was all over my arm, herself, the doll - you get the picture. It was not pretty. It made me seriously re-consider what we stash in the car.

Also, now that she’s getting older, she needs something entertaining. (Before she would just zonk out and it was glorious!)

Below is a quick survival kit that you can stash in the car or bring with you:

On the Go Potty - Below are our picks:
Kalenco Potty
Cool Gear Travel Potty
Boy portable Potty
Folding Seat Cushion
While you are at it, get some toilet covers for older kids and yourself

Disposable wee wee pads - when my little one got sick, these came in handy! The car seat was wet so we padded with this sheet and threw one over her (new) clothes just in case of another accident. They are also great for potty training! These are a good value on amazon: http://amzn.to/1UXio5H Don't worry that they say Pet or have a picture of a dog, they work great for kids too at the price :)

Hand Wipes - I really wish I stashed more! We needed a ton. I use these: Babyganics Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitizing Wipes

Baby Wipes - You never know what kind of situation may arise but you bet your baby’s bottom you’ll need at least a pack

Change of clothes - Refresh every 1-2 months dependent on child’s age to ensure it will fit. Basic items like leggings, bodysuits or t-shirts, underwear, socks and a change of shoes are a must

Tablet holders - Cars with entertainment packages built-in are overrated and expensive. Make your own unit by getting a tablet holder like this: http://amzn.to/1UXi0nR

Charger - Our car has your standard cigarette lighter so we bought a converter for a USB and can use our regular chargers in the car: Satechi® Smart Converter USB Port Cigarette Adapter

Trays and containers - a tray and a few spill proof containers will reduce the mess you’ll need to clean up, plus it gives them space to draw, color and play. Win Win!

Spill proof containers are perfect for little hands: http://amzn.to/265BcHP

Car protection gear
We outfitted our leased car with several of these items to protect the vehicle:
Kick Mats: http://amzn.to/2605lvP
Sun Visor: http://amzn.to/1Ub8FJw
Seat protector (works well for rear facing kickers too!): http://amzn.to/1tynjEo
Car Seat Sun Protector (we didn’t want her to touch hot buckles): http://amzn.to/1XYnENu

Emergency Medical Kit
When we travel, I bring any necessary meds with us and do NOT leave it in the car. If you have to, put them in a cooler (extreme hot or cold temps can mess with the meds). You should keep a basic First Aid Kit in the car all the time. It is great to have in case of a scraped knee or cut. This one is perfect for any medical emergency: First Aid Kit 115 Piece for Car

And of course, let’s not forget, snacks and drinks! Bring at least 2 bottles per person of water and a variety of snacks in ZipLocks or individual portions. Granola bars, nuts, goldfish, puffs, cheerios, crackers and other dried snacks are always perfect on the go. Grab some peeled and cut bananas, apples, and other fruit as well in a cooler!

Enjoy the trip and let us know where you went!

Travel Gadgets for Parents (and Kids)

Gadgets for Parents and Kids:
Traveling with kids is fun. It opens them up to the world around them, introduces them to nature as well as culture. It also comes with some challenges such as keeping them from wondering off, safe, and entertained.
Kids gadgets and other travel gadgets can make it more enjoyable, fun, and stress free.

Filip
It is, as per their site, the world's first smart locator and phone for kids. This device looks just like a small plastic watch. However, it does a lot more.
It is a locator. By setting what they call a Safe Zone, you can monitor where your kids are within a certain area.

And it is also a phone
Mobile phones come with certain dangers for little ones, and they lose them often. Filip has a 2-way GSM cellular voice capability that provides the similar quality of coverage that you expect from a regular smartphone. You pre-program 5 phone numbers that your child can call using the Filip app for smartphones. This way they do not make unnecessary or expensive calls and have important numbers readily available. Your child can scroll through the numbers and call the one they want with the touch of a button. Moreover, you and only the 4 other people pre-programmed on the phone can call the child. You can also send text messages.

Along similar lines there is
Toddler Tag
A small device that helps keep track of your child’s location. It works wirelessly and is waterproof. The locator is a two-unit system--one that attaches to your child and one you keep with you. When a child starts to wonder away and strays out of a 25-foot range, a chirp-like alert sounds from your unit, so you're immediately aware.

SEAL swim monitor
While know where your kids are is important, it is even more important to make sure they are safe during the water activities. Kids are rambunctious, that is just their nature, they are full of energy. I have seen a couple of kids at a local pool dive in, get out, and dive in again more times in one minute then a dolphin.
The SEAL swim monitor and drowning detection is a wearable alarm system comprised of a band that hangs around the child's neck, which connects wirelessly to a guard band for parents. If the system detects a potential drowning incident in progress, the SEAL band triggers a high intensity visible, audible, and vibrating alarm alerting guards and guardians to the danger so that a rescue can begin. The SEAL bands are adjustable with multiple colors and look like colorful necklaces during swimming. www.swimsealsafe.com

Contigo Autoseal Trekker Cup
Keep spills to a minimum with this kid-proof bottle. The lid is 100% spill and leak proof. The cup automatically seals between sips so no accidental escapes.

Sign of the times – parents take at least three gadgets on a trip just to keep the kids happy. Gadgets such iPad, smartphones, game consoles, and laptops
Fuhu NABI Tablet is a kid friendly tablet that is easy to hold. Kids are able to surf using kid-safe Web browser, watch movies and TV shows, read books, learn math and play games.
game consoles
Before you go, download some fun and educational apps on your smartphone. You know your kids will want to play with one, so it will keep them entertained for a bit.
You can also pre-load some games, movies and shows on your laptop for the family to enjoy while at the airport or killing time in a hotel room.

If nothing else works to keep your kids entertained, tune out, with noise-cancelling headphones:)

Kids Travel Gadgets for Fun Summer Travel

Kids Travel Gadgets for Fun Summer Travel

This week I realized I have not done a kids gadgets post in awhile. I was reminded by my co-worker when she was describing how they are getting their 6 months old daughter accustomed to travel. They started with a couple of short trips and when she did well on those, they took her on a longer journey. Large percentage of time kids and travel go together. And they have many of the same needs that adults have plus more. They are quite discerning travelers and don't hesitate to tell everyone what is what. Kids Say the Darndest Things
To keep them busy and entertained this summer travel season, here are some useful and fun travel gadgets:

Seat Pets
These fun looking animals are actually seat belt pads. They slip onto a belt and provide cushioning for the little voyagers. These particular Seat Pets are great as their head also can act as pillows for the kids to nod off. More comfy they are in the back, hopefully, they would less fussy too. The Pets also come with a pocket where they can store water bottles, their handheld gadgets, and snacks. Seat Pets

Kindle Fire (with kid-friendly new features)
Kindle is one of the best travel gadgets. Easily store and access multiple books without having to actually drag them around. It is a great device to keep kids entertained with books, videos, and games. However, these new versions also allow web access and can lead to many hours spent on it. With Kindle FreeTime, you can set daily screen limits, and give access to each chilp appropriate to their age. When kids are in Kindle FreeTime mode, the background color and fonts change to a kid-friendly design. Kids only see titles that have been selected for them. You can find out more about Kindle FreeTime here

Kid-ready Digital Cameras
Travel and pictures go together. It is fun and keeps mementos of places you have visited and things you have done. Start off your young photographer with these great kid-friendly cameras:

Take 'N' Play Games

BPA-Free Water Bottles for Kids

This bike stroller means you can really go the distance with baby in tow

This airline baby seat lets your baby relax hammock-style.

More Kids Newest Travel Gadgets:

The Digital Baby Pacifier Thermometer is the easiest way to take your baby's temperature.

A Car Seat Sun Shade keeps the seat at a comfortable 69 degree

Keep-It-Kleen Pacifier closes on its own when dropped

A On the Go Play 'n Snack Tray puts a lot of kids' books, pencils, toys, and other fun stuff within their reach. Making traveling easier and more fun
